This private retreat is located on the western end of a sloping, fourteen-acre site on Guemes Island, WA. Designed for year-round living, the house is composed in three parts: living pavilion, master bedroom wing and guesthouse. The kitchen, dining, living and study rooms form the living pavilion, while the master bedroom is located in a semi-private wing. The guesthouse connects to the living pavilion via a covered walkway. Large Lift & Slide doors in the living pavilion open at the corners, bringing the outdoors in. A centrally located concrete and metal fireplace provides enjoyment from the living, dining and kitchen spaces.
Quantum’s Lift & Slide Doors in douglas fir are found throughout the main house and guest house. Cornering Lift & Slides are situated in the dining room (over 25’ total opening), living room (over 21’ opening) and master bedroom (just under 20’ opening). The doors feature interior rectangular sticking and exterior beveled glazing stops. FFI Stainless Steel carriage systems in aluminum dark bronze carry the panels over a sill track and head guide finished in dark bronze anodized aluminum. The weather stripping is specified Euro Black. All doors are outfitted with insect screens with flush pulls, black fiberglass mesh and bronze aluminum frames.
Sustainable features incorporated into the design include a living green roof that slows runoff and provides additional insulation. All potable water for the home is collected from the roofs, and the cabinetry and countertops were milled from salvaged maple trees felled on the site. The extended roof plane shades the interior in summer, while allowing the sun in during the fall and winter months.
